Frequently Asked Question

How to Move M2/M3 Software from Windows 7 to Windows 10 or Windows 11
Last Updated 3 years ago

1. Before leaving the Windows 7 system, backup the directory “C:\Users\Public\Documents\MetLogix” including all of its subdirectories. Very important as inspection programs, system settings, and calibration data are all stored in this location. Copy this backup to a flash drive.

2. Confirm and note the version of the M2 or M3 software that you are running.

3. Confirm the machine's video device. The camera device on your equipment is one of the following: Analog, Videology, Ueye, iCube, or Image Source.  You need to obtain the correct camera driver for your system.

If you are unable to confirm this information yourself, then follow these steps:

a. Launch your M series software.

b. Follow the machine startup procedure.

c. Click on the M icon in the Top Left corner of the screen.

d. Click on the Gear Icon in the menu that appears after clicking on the M icon.

e. Click on the About button in the setup screen, and on the next screen click on the Backup button.

f. Exit the M series software

g. From the windows file explore, navigate to "C:\Users\Public\Documents\MetLogix\Backups" and set the view to details.

h. Email the newest XML Document/file  "M*.xml"   to us at help@visioneng.support or open a new support ticket and attach the XML file and request the camera type for your machine. We will review the file and inform you of the version of the software you have and the camera driver needed.

You are now ready to install M2/M3 to Windows 10.

All of our video-based metrology equipment requires two USB inputs except for the Xpress, which only requires one USB connection. Do not connect the USB inputs to the computer until you have installed the camera driver software and the M2/M3 software.

Also, we recommend an internet connection when you first setup up Windows 10 to ensure Windows 10 is entirely up to date and for online help from Vision Engineering Support.

A note about anti-virus software. M2 and M3 work well with Windows Defender (Windows 10 default antivirus) and well as others. However, we have seen issues with Avast Antivirus.

1. Download the camera driver for your machine and the correct version of the M Series software.

2. Install the camera driver software first for your machine.

3. Install the M2/M3 measuring software. Install the C++ redistribution package if prompted to do so.

4. Ensure that the machine and its interface box are powered up, then connect both USB cables to the computer (only one for the Xpress products).

5. Check that no devices have exclamation marks next to them in Windows Device Manager.

6. Launch the M2/M3 software. Once the software is running, immediately exit the software. You can ignore any Red Error Messages in the software on this step.

7. Restore the directory backup from the Windows 7 system to “C:\Users\Public\Documents\MetLogix”.

8. Relaunch the M2/M3 software and test that everything is working.

Other notes:

M2/M3 software does not like screen savers of any kind. Instead, turn off the monitor in system power settings.

In System Power Options/Advanced Settings set the following:

  • Standard hard drive:  Set a time out to a number of minutes (usually 10).
  • Solid-state drive: Set the time out to Never.
  • Sleep: Set all Sleep settings to Never.
  • USB settings / USB selective suspend setting set to Disable.
  • PCI Express / Link State Power Management set to Off.

If your computer is being set up on a network domain with multiple logins, please make sure each user has access to the “C:\Users\Public\Documents\MetLogix\” Directory. Also, we recommend that each user has a logout script that ensures the M2/M3 software is shut down before logging off the system. If the software is left running and a user logs out, another user logging into the computer will not be able to use the M2/M3 software.
